What do we mean by "general use"? Well these are the binoculars that live in your car's glove box and only come out on holiday to view wildlife or scenery. They won't need extra low light sensitivity so the expense of level IV optical coatings isn't justified.
For events such as air shows or motor / horse racing a good field of view is vital to find your target. But you don't need extreme magnification as this would make them hard to hold steady by hand.
Equally they must be either compact or medium sized to save space. But you still expect a sharp image and a quality product.
The following models would be our choice.
Good binoculars can really bring alive events such as airshows.
