I have today (27th June 2006) paid for a pair of binoculars purchased from Strathspey binoculars. Strange opening I agree but all will be revealed very soon. I placed an order for a pair of Strathspey 20x50 binoculars on 20th june, delivered on the 22nd. Although well made and of seemingly good quality, no matter how hard I tried I just could not get these binoculars to focus and they were extremely uncomfortable to use. I repacked them with the intention to send them back and sent an email to the company explaining that the product was not suitable and that I would be returning them. Now at this point most distance sellers would have replied with a return number and a long winded procedure of how to return the product. Not with Strathspey. I had a reply within minutes and I quote.
"Can you tell me what would improve them for you? Maybe I could recommend an alternative? Is it the design of the eyecups for example?"
Intrigued with this sort of unexpected reply I felt obliged to give my reasons for returning the binoculars. Numerous emails then ensued with lots of questions from me and answers that I could understand from Strathspey. Unpacking the binoculars and comparing measurements with a pair of 7x35 Tento (15 years old) that I own, a conclusion was finally reached. There was in fact only a minor impediment with the binoculars from Strathspey and the fault actually lay with me and an unusually large head! A minor bit of engineering was needed to the 'body' of the binoculars to increase the range of the IPD*. Most if not all companies would have asked for their product back to make these sort of adjustments, obviously incurring more cost and not to mention inconvenience to the customer in returning them. Astonishingly not only would Strathspey honour the warranty if I undertook the adjustment myself but they were also willing to have them back if they were still not suitable. Outstanding!
With the minor adjustment finished these binoculars actually exceed my expectations. This is a company that I would use again and would gladly recommend to any body, family, friend or complete stranger. From first time buyer to the seasoned professional. They have a customer service that I can guarantee nobody would have experienced before, very patient, most accommodating and above all extremely trusting! Highly recommended.
May I take this opportunity to thank john@unixnerd... for his kindness and understanding in this matter.
